Choosing a virtual environment

SciComp@UNC, BEARCLAW, Math@UNC are related virtual machine environments, all built on the same ArchLinux platform. Math@UNC is the basic environment suitable for undergraduate coursework, and uses public domain mathematical software with limited development and visualization tools. BEARCLAW adds the namesake software package along with visualization tools and a more complete development environment. SciComp@UNC also includes several preconfigured commercial packages that require authorized access to a UNC license server to run. Choose an environment according to needs and available resources

Virtual environment Required disk space Host hardware
Math@UNC 28 GB Core i5, 4GB RAM
BEARCLAW 36 GB Core i5, 8GB RAM
